Who doesn’t like a comeback story?

Whitney Houston Fab Chick

What better comeback this year than Fab Chick Whitney Houston!  So, despite my like not love of Whitney Houston as a singer, I do recognize her talent and what she has overcome.   Who could forget the Diane Sawyer interview for the classic line..”Crack is wack”…The Whitney from the bricks is straight forward and to the point, a true “wha wha.   Then there was the legendary WBLS-FM sound clip from the “Wendy Williams Experience” Part One  and Part Two (You have to listen to both, hang in there for the static on Part Two), No Clive Davis magic wand on this one, straight ride or die.  We will not go into “Being Bobby Brown”, the reality TV show that put a spot light on the dysfunction. No matter what was the drug, the lack of  self love or staying in a relationship that is not for you,  we have all experienced or have someone close to us who has experienced a valley.

After all of that, the least I could do is hit up iTunes for ‘I Look To You.”   The high notes are not there but I am ok with that.  The album starts with “Million Dollar Baby” which reminds me of  “Let No Man Put Asunder”  by First Choice, a true club banger for us “of a certain age” ;-)   The upbeat two step vibe continues with “Nothing But Love”  and “Call You Tonight” and I feel like I need to hold up my martini glass in one hand  and dip my head slightly feelin’ the music.  Just when the buzz is moving, the pace slows to ” I Look to You”, I’m not mad, just killed my martini buzz, that song is for another night.  “Like I Never Left” is good without Akon.  NEXT.   Then NEXT again, I get the Donny Hathaway cover and the autobiographical references in “A Song for You”, it almost seems like it would be a remix, I can defintely hear this one in the clubs.  Track 8,  ‘Worth It” a good, be easy on the drive to work tune.  The remaining tracks are just ok, “Salute” is a good independence song, which probably says plenty about her road back.   In the Oprah interview, Whitney says she was in her pj’s for seven months.  I can’t even imagine all she has been through but she appears to be out of the valley.  Blessings to you Whitney!
